New Year, New Classes and a Brand New Website

Welcome to 2019, and as you can see from our website, we have a brand new look! A massive thank you to Craft Applied who designed and built this for us. It makes a great new start to a brand New Year!

We’re starting the New Year with a new courses, so let’s get right down to talking about that. The course is called Learning Cryptography with Python and is a gently introduction into coding, ciphers and cryptography. We do have a minimum age limit of 10 for this, as some of the concepts need more background and ideally students would already have some background of programming. Specifically, some knowledge of Python would help make the classes easier and enable us to cover more ground. The classes will run from 4:00pm till 5:00pm with 5:00pm till 6:00pm available for practicals, workshops and Python exercises. We’ll be starting this class on January 19th. We only have 10 spaces available for this class, so book right away if you’re interested at our Coder Dojo page here: https://zen.coderdojo.com/dojos/im/douglas/douglas-iom-steam-lab

We also have HTML and Scratch classes lined up for the near future, if you don’t have the prerequisites, please hold on and book onto one of those. These are repeats of classes we have done previously, but we always have new students looking to join, so we have no doubt we can fill these quickly too 🙂 More about those later.

In other news, Love Tech, is organising a screening of General Magic, a documentary about the most important company in Silicon Valley that you’ve never heard of. These will be two screenings of the film with Manx-born director Sarah Kerruish on hand to answer questions about the film, film-making and the early days of Silicon Valley. One is aimed at 12 to 18 year olds and the other for adults. More details and tickets here: https://lovetech.im/events/

And last but not least, we’ve started a Crowd-Funding campaign on Just Giving to raise funds for Code Club. All monies collected will be used to buy equipment for Code Club and to keep our initiative going. All our classes are delivered by volunteers, but having facilities on hand means we can do more. If you can help, please give generously at https://www.justgiving.com/crowdfunding/iomcodeclub
