Isle of Man Code Club wins Award for Excellence

I’m delighted to announce that the Isle of Man Code Club has been awarded an Award for Excellence in the Digital Champions category. First of all, a massive thank you to everyone who’s been involved in the creating, supporting and running of Code Club. It’s amazing that something which started as an idea has managed to gain so much support and capture so much passion.

Here’s a chunk of our acceptance speech that iterates our message:

Why do we do what we do? We believe it’s important for everyone to understand the technology around us, be able to leverage it and channel it to make the world a better place. Coding is one way to do this, but we also provide kids with access to 3D printers, VR headsets, robotics, electronics and a host of other technologies where they can use their creativity to learn new skills, share what they know and teach others. The world is changing at an exponential pace, existing jobs and business models are being disrupted and digital skills will be tremendously important in the future. We hope to instil kids (and adults) passing through Code Club with an appreciation of logic and computational thinking which will help them whichever path of life they decide to take.

It’s fantastic that we have tremendous demand for what we do. Every time we announce a new class, it’s full within a couple of hours. We’d love to do more but are constrained by the resources we have. Classes are free; inclusivity is top on our agenda; but electricity bills still need to be paid, and we always need to buy new kit and replace consumables. If you can help us, please get in touch. We can do more. We WANT to do more. But without your help we cannot grow.

We’re at a great place at the moment. We’re starting to see some of the kids who came to Code Club in the first year come back to see if they can contribute and run classes. We’re teaching more than technology, we’re helping them embrace their fears and failures, find new experiences and see what change they can bring to the world. Your contributions, large or small can help us sustain what we’re doing and give these kids a platform to make the world a better place.
